Barrett and Holland bought a grocery store, selling groceries and clothing in 1870 and developed the business into two shops; one selling groceries and the other selling clothes. In the 1920s the company was bought by Alfred Button & Sons but retained the trading name Holland & Barrett. Over the years the business has changed hands several times and in 1970, Holland & Barrett was acquired by Booker McConnell. Later Heath & Heather Stores was also received by Booker McConnell who was later renamed Holland & Barrett. The company was later acquired by NBTY which was in turn bought by private American equity firm the Carlyle Group in 2010.
